Meet the Master of Dwarvenheim: Stefan Pokorny
A Hero’s Origin Story
Born on December 25, 1966, in Seoul, South Korea, Stefan Alexander Pokorny’s life has been a tale of wonder and imagination from the start. Adopted by renowned New York architect Jan Hird Pokorny and his wife Marise Angelucci-Pokorny, Stefan grew up surrounded by creativity and craftsmanship. It was in this environment that his passion for art, storytelling, and world-building took root - a passion that would eventually revolutionize the world of tabletop gaming.
From Artist to Architect of Imagination
Stefan’s journey began in the fine arts, earning both a Bachelor of Fine Arts (cum laude) and a Master of Fine Artsfrom the Hartford Art School between 1986 and 1992. While others saw paint and canvas, Stefan saw worlds waiting to be built. His love for Dungeons & Dragons and fantasy storytelling inspired him to reimagine the way games were played, turning flat, two-dimensional maps into breathtaking, three-dimensional landscapes that players could explore and conquer.
The Birth of Dwarven Forge
In 1996, Stefan co-founded Dwarven Forge, introducing a new era of immersive gameplay with his line of modular 3D terrain pieces. Using his proprietary material, Dwarvenite - a virtually indestructible PVC-based compound - Stefan created meticulously detailed dungeons, caverns, and castles that brought fantasy worlds to life like never before.
Thanks to his visionary leadership, Dwarven Forge has raised over $23 million through record-breaking Kickstarter campaigns, earning Stefan a reputation as a “legendary Dungeon Master” who inspires gamers around the globe.
Stefan on the Big Screen: The Dwarvenaut

"Humor, creativity, and just the right amount of chaos to make even the most absurd moments feel epic."
“I have had the experience of playing in many games with Stefan as the DM. His storytelling is rich with humor, creativity, and just the right amount of chaos to make even the most absurd moments feel epic. He is fun, he uses AMAZING visuals & props, and he balances the tone perfectly, making every character choice matter, even for a cantankerous gnome that hated life in general.
In one of his games I played a miserable grumpy gnome named Humbuggle who was only happy when he was miserable. He met his demise being slowly eaten alive by a giant crab. It was, of course, the happiest moment in his life—and he was not happy about it. Just one of the many memorable events in all the adventures I’ve played with him. 10/10, would get devoured again.”
